What is Play Therapy?

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling. Play therapy gives them another language: the language of play.

Through play, children can express emotions, process experiences, and learn coping skills in a way that feels natural and safe. Research from the Association for Play Therapy (APT) shows that play therapy is an evidence-based approach that helps children build emotional resilience, reduce stress, and improve relationships.

Play Therapists for kids in Beaverton, Oregon provide evidence-based counseling for kids ages 3-10.

When Should I choose Pediatric Occupational Therapy?

A woman sitting on a blanket on a sofa, surrounded by colorful balls and plush toys, laughing with her eyes closed.

You might consider occupational therapy (OT) when everyday activities feel harder than they should for your child. OT helps kids build the skills, confidence, and regulation they need to thrive at home, in school, and with friends.

Our Pediatric Occupational Therapists are trained to help your child develop an understanding of their body’s unique needs through play, exploration, and connection. At the foundation of our practice is the belief that through nurturing, patient, and compassionate care, all children are capable of reaching their highest potential and thriving in their daily lives.

When a parent engages in therapy, it often creates a ripple effect of positive change for both themselves and their family. Therapy provides a safe space for parents to explore their own experiences, process stress, and develop healthier coping strategies, which directly enhances their emotional regulation and well-being. By addressing their own challenges, parents become more present, attuned, and responsive to their children’s needs, fostering a secure parent-child connection. This self-awareness and growth also model healthy emotional habits for their children, creating a foundation for resilience and emotional intelligence within the family. Engaging in therapy is an investment in not only the parent’s healing but also in building a stronger, healthier family dynamic.

Why choose play-based, neuro-relational mental health therapy for children, tweens and teens?

Play is a powerful tool in the therapeutic process because it supports connection, emotional regulation, and brain integration, key principles of interpersonal neurobiology. When we engage in play, especially in a safe and attuned therapeutic relationship, the brain releases positive neurochemicals, fostering trust and reducing stress. Play activates multiple regions of the brain, promoting the integration of thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations, which is essential for healing and growth. It allows individuals, especially children, to explore experiences, express emotions, and develop new ways of relating to themselves and others in a non-threatening, creative space. Through play, the therapeutic process becomes one of connection and transformation, building neural pathways that support resilience and well-being, treating a wide range of behavioral and relational concerns such as anxiety, ADHD, sensory sensitivity, low self-esteem/self-confidence, emotional regulation challenges, dealing with grief and loss, and much more.
